Ground stations
A ground station is the point where a satellite path becomes a terrestrial one. This page is the engineering: what one does, how Xalant plans to build one, and what each step actually involves.
Xalant designs, sites, powers and licenses ground equipment. The constellation overhead belongs to a satellite operator.

What a ground station does.
Data relay
It moves traffic between the satellite path and the terrestrial network behind it, in both directions, and it is the only place those two meet.
Command and control
It carries the control channel the space segment needs, which is why the antennas, the timing and the power all have their own redundancy.
Network management
It is where the link is observed: state, capacity, uptime. On a Xalant pad that reporting is specified into the build rather than added afterwards.

Four steps, in order. Each is a step Xalant controls, which is why none of them carries a duration.

Site selection
Sky view first: elevation mask, horizon obstructions and rain-fade exposure. Then the boring part that decides everything — land title, access for a crane, and a fibre route that exists.

Power and hard-line fibre
The pad is designed to draw from the site’s own generation rather than from a utility queue, with battery ride-through on the pad. Fibre is hard-line into the edge centre, with a second route where the ground allows one.

Earth-station licensing
The FCC Part 25 earth-station licence and the spectrum coordination beside it. Xalant works the steps with the site owner and reports which step a project is on.

Testing and calibration
Antenna pointing, gain and pattern checks, and an end-to-end soak before anything is handed over. The measurements that come out of this step are the first real numbers a site will ever have.
No duration is attached to any of these steps. The first three depend on a regulator, a landowner and a utility corridor, and the fourth produces the first measurements this sub-site will ever have — none of which is a figure Xalant can publish before it exists.

Questions about ground stations
- What does a ground station actually do?
- Three things at once. It relays traffic between the satellite path and the terrestrial network behind it; it carries the control channel the space segment needs; and it is the point where the link is observed, which is why state, capacity and uptime reporting is specified into the build rather than added afterwards.
- Does Xalant own the station, or does a partner operate it?
- Not settled, and it would be easy to imply an answer here that does not exist. Both models are ordinary in this industry — an operator places its own equipment on a hosted pad, or a site owner builds and runs the station itself — and which one applies to a given Xalant site depends on an agreement that has not been made.
- What decides where a station can go?
- Sky view first — elevation mask, horizon obstructions, rain-fade exposure. Then the unglamorous half that actually decides it: land title, a route a crane can reach, a fibre path that exists, and a power source that is not a utility queue.
- What licence is needed?
- In the United States, an FCC Part 25 earth-station licence, plus the frequency coordination that goes with it. Xalant works the steps with the site owner and says which step a project is on, rather than quoting a duration nobody controls.
- When will there be real measurements?
- After testing and calibration on a built station. Antenna pointing, gain and pattern checks and an end-to-end soak are the first point at which any figure on this sub-site stops being a design intent — and when those numbers exist they replace the model, with the date they were taken.
