How it works.
A cell tower in orbit
The satellite carries a base station rather than a bent-pipe transponder, so it presents itself to the handset the way a tower on a hill would.
The phone already in your pocket
The category is defined by working with unmodified handsets on existing mobile bands. That is what separates it from satellite phones, which need their own hardware.
It joins an operator’s network
The satellite layer attaches to a mobile operator’s core much as a roaming arrangement would. Any service reaching a subscriber therefore arrives through their own operator, not from Xalant.
The mechanism above is how the category works in general, and it is described without naming an operator on purpose: several unrelated companies are building direct-to-device services, the product names change, and Xalant has no announced role in any of them.

Xalant’s work in this chain is ground: gateway pads and ground stations that a satellite operator’s traffic has to land on somewhere. Xalant is not a mobile network operator, holds no spectrum licence for mobile service, and has no announced role in any operator’s direct-to-device service. If that changes, this page changes with it.

Questions about satellite direct-to-device
- Does my phone need anything special?
- No, and that is the whole definition of the category. A direct-to-device satellite carries a base station rather than a bent-pipe transponder and presents itself to an unmodified handset on bands the handset already supports. A satellite phone is a different product with its own hardware.
- Can I buy this from Xalant?
- No. Xalant is not a mobile network operator, holds no mobile spectrum licence, and has no announced role in any operator's direct-to-device service. Anything reaching a handset arrives through that subscriber's own mobile operator.
- Then what is Xalant's part in it?
- Ground. Traffic from a constellation has to land on earth-station equipment somewhere, and that equipment needs land, power, grounding, fibre and a licence — which is the work Xalant designs and plans to build.
- Will it work where I live?
- Xalant does not publish a coverage claim for it, and would be wrong to. Direct-to-device availability is set by the satellite operator and by the mobile operator whose network the service attaches to, and neither of those is Xalant.
- Why is this page called Direct-to-Cell?
- It is the generic name the industry uses for the category, and it is the address this page already has. Vendor product names in this space have changed and will change again; the page is named for the mechanism rather than for any one company's product.
